Video: Oh the Urbanity! ranks urbanist North American cities
What's the total area with both density and a large non-car commuting share?
Oh the Urbanity! posted a video ranking North American cities by how urbanist they are, adding up the total area of neighbourhoods that satisfy these two thresholds:
Density higher than 4000 people per square km (not that hard)
More than 40% of commuters walk, bike, or take transit (harder)
It's pretty interesting to see which neighbourhoods in Metro Vancouver meet these two criteria:
Downtown and the West End
The Expo Line out to New West and Surrey
The Canada Line south to Marpole and Lansdowne in Richmond
Lougheed in Burnaby
Guildford in Surrey
Lonsdale Quay on the North Shore
And taking a less parochial view, it’s fascinating to see how the different cities in the top 10 compare. They also show the rest of the top 20.
