The Senakw project, currently under construction, is a good illustration of the extreme restrictiveness of Vancouver’s zoning bylaws. The only reason it can be built is that it’s on a relatively small parcel of Squamish reserve land, so it’s not subject to the city’s laws. Meanwhile, right across the street, apartment buildings are illegal.

First residents could move into Senakw's first rental housing tower by the end of 2025. Kenneth Chan, Daily Hive, March 2025.
Wow that's amazing. I saw those towers but didn't realize they were on a part of the Squamish Nation.
That leaves me with so many questions - will residents be subject to the City of Vancouvers's bylaws? Is the Squamish Nation a part of Metro Vancouver's waste management programs? Do they have an agreement to use the city's pipes?
I found an article that answers some of them: https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/senakw-squamish-first-nation-city-of-vancouver-agreement-plan
Always glad to see more housing!
