Didn't you run for council too Russill? ABC was backed by developers and my guess is that you are simply a private investor trying to fan your profits at this point. As a born and raised Vancouverite, I can attest to the displacement and gentrification here from the Okanagan and yes, I'm lonely without my friends and family and seething mad!

Hi Linsea, I'm sorry you've been forced to move away by housing being so scarce and expensive in Vancouver, but I'm glad you were able to find housing in the Okanagan.

I did indeed run unsuccessfully on Kennedy Stewart's Forward Together slate. morehousing.ca/election-results

Other than being a homeowner (we're in a townhouse), I don't have any investments in real estate. Our retirement savings are about 50/50 in GICs and low-cost index funds (the "Canadian Couch Potato" approach). With index funds, it's much easier to diversify your investments, and to spread your investments over time (to avoid the risk of buying at the peak). Plus I'm not a fan of borrowing to invest ("leverage"), which magnifies your risk as well as your potential returns. https://russilwvong.com/blog/investing https://web.archive.org/web/20221005054815/https://vancouver.ca/files/cov/wvong-russil-councillor-disclosure-statement-2022.pdf

Like TEAM, CityHallWatch, etc., I spend a lot of time on volunteer housing advocacy because I sincerely want to make the city a better, less expensive, and less precarious place. It's just that I disagree strongly with TEAM about what's causing the problem, and what to do about it.

Russil, I didn’t ask for a mansplained take on investing, nor did I choose to leave my birth city and two of my three children behind. It’s great that you have savings, but if you genuinely want to make the city a more affordable and better place, I’d suggest distancing yourself from the developer-backed AHV and seeking insight from actual subject matter experts. While you may claim not to be an investor, your apparent lack of curiosity about why experts are saying the opposite of what you’re advocating suggests that you may have a financial interest in this matter.
