Been eager to see Jake's academic work! Nice summary.

The identification of the "return to the city" thing starting in "a trickle in the 50s and 60s" is new to me. Is it unique to NYC?

Thanks Michael! Good question, I'm really not sure. I remember reading William Julius Wilson's "When Work Disappears" (1996) describing how jobs in American cities had moved from the inner city to the suburbs, and I don't know exactly when that would have changed.

Larry Beasley's "Vancouverism" talks about how Vancouver made a concerted effort to make high-density living in the inner city attractive, starting around 1990.
